1930年~2002年
山形県高畑町生まれ。高校卒業後、彫刻家の桜井祐一に師事する。
日本美術院展に出品、1931年に初入選以来、奨励賞、白寿賞など受賞。
1960年、新海竹蔵、桜井祐一らと院展を離れ、彫刻家集団「S・A・S」結成に参加。同集団が国画会に彫刻の部を新設。国画会会員となる。
国展のほか、現代日本美術展、彫刻の森美術館大賞展などに出品。平櫛田中賞,中原悌二郎賞など受賞。「家族の肖像」シリーズや、道元、千利休、良寛、松尾芭蕉、小林一茶など歴史上の人物を題材とした木彫で知られた。
「人間の存在とは何か」を、彫刻を通し、私たちに投げかける作品を制作した彫刻家。

Born in Takahata Town, Yamagata Prefecture. After graduating from high school, he studied under the sculptor Yuichi Sakurai.
He exhibited at the Nihon Bijutsuin Exhibition and has won the Encouragement Award and the Hakuju Award since he was first selected in 1931.
In 1960, he left the institute exhibition with Takezo Shinkai and Yuichi Sakurai and participated in the formation of the sculptor group “SAS”. The group newly established a sculpture section in the Kokugakai. He becomes a member of the Kokugakai.
In addition to the national exhibition, he has exhibited at contemporary Japanese art exhibitions and the Hakone Open Air Museum Grand Prize Exhibition. He has won the Hirakushi Tanaka Award and the Nakahara Teijiro Award. He was known for his “Family Portrait” series and wood carvings of historical figures such as Dogen, Sen no Rikyu, Ryokan, Matsuo Basho, and Kobayashi Issa.
He is a sculptor who created works that cast “what is human existence” on us through sculpture.
